about

Ruby Donohoe creates interdisciplinary works rooted in the politics and poetics of encounter. With a background in contemporary performance and a body-based practice, Ruby uses expanded choreographic practices to create live performance, participatory works, videos, objects, site-specific events, installations, sculpture, text, and audio experiences.

This spanning practice is underpinned by an interest in humankind’s simultaneous radical alienation from and radical intimacy with the personal body and the ways in which this paradox is an important hinge in unpacking our conceptions of ‘other’. Informed by the idea that ‘not knowing is most intimate’, her works revel in the fertile possibilities of estrangement and slippery dislocations of the “I”.  Her participatory performance works often explore boundaries, repetition as culture, consent, and play.

Interested in non-fixed, emergent states, Ruby’s self-taught art practice explores expanded thresholds between inanimate and animate, the problematics and exquisite delights of surface, suspensions of time, private moments in public places, and the gap between sensing and understanding.

Ruby is a founding director of IN | artist run initiative based out of The Old Lock Up (Maroochydore, Kabi Kabi Country) co-run with June Sartracom and Sharna Barker. Ruby is also a founding director of OUTBOUND | Contemporary Dance x Live Art Festival with Courtney Scheu launching on Kabi Kabi Country in 2023.
